Gingers are unique tropical flowers that last a long time in a vase! To keep them going at home be sure to change out your water every 2 days and dunk the entire ginger bloom into water for up to 10 minutes. After you dunk it, cut your stems about a 1/2 inch before placing it back in your vase of fresh water. This can prolong the life of your ginger and keep it looking fresh and vibrant. With both vase and foam arrangements, always make sure you are placing them in a dark, cool location in your home. Placing them in direct sunlight or near a warm environment will decrease their lifespan.

Growing in your garden:

Red Ginger – Blooms of Hawaii

Your ornamental ginger can grow outdoors in direct morning sun or in slight shade. They make a beautiful addition to any garden in hot, humid climates like South Florida and other Tropical areas of the world. They require moist, well-draining soil and can even take over your garden space if not properly pruned.

Ginger flowers are grown separately from ginger that are edible. Shampoo ginger creates suds similar to shampoo which can be used for dry, damaged hair as well as nourishing the scalp! Other variations of ginger produce ginger for human consumption as well as turmeric. There are 3 edible types of ginger. Ginger, turmeric, and galangal. These grow well in Northwest and North Central Florida. Ginger can grow anywhere from 3-4 feet tall from the rhizomes. Rhizomes are the hot spices that are contained in the Zingiberaceae family. Ginger flowers come in many shapes, colors, and sizes. We typically carry pink and red blooms. Wild gingers bloom early in the Spring.
